Expand 9 – D9 and Dsus2 Chords

Today we go beyond just 3 strings AND beyond the normal triad.

Educational Video – Learn the guitar fretboard

The three strings i’m choosing today are the G, B and E strings, three highest strings on the guitar.
On the seventh fret of the G string we got the D note the root, if we drop back to the fifth fret for the other two strings here we find the E the A right there on the fifth fret.
Dropping back to the cowboy chord position, of course like open E string all day long we got our e note. We get our D note on the third fret and the A on the second fret of the G string. One more position, ninth fret we got the E note on the G string and then on the tenth fret the other two notes.
So if we wanted to expand nine we can add some notes to that now here’s something i really want to share with this just helps so much in being a musician these days, you don’t have to play all the notes the chord. You can play some of the notes, because you might be in a band or you might be doing a multi-track recording, you’re jamming with some friends, and they’re covering some of those notes.
Even though a D9 chord has five notes in it, you don’t have to play all five you can play just three if you want and it could still sound really cool and perhaps in the context of what you’re playing it might sound even better.

So let’s say you wanted to expand the number of strings you were playing what would make more sense than to add the D string, you can play these four strings.
Let’s expand one more string let’s go five strings. The root note D is on the fifth fret of the A string, F# on the fourth fret of the D string, we get a C on the fifth fret of the G string, E note on the fifth fret of the B string, and there’s an A on the fifth fret of the E string.
This is a really awesome chord position. Ii like the way that sounds it’s a D9 chord, you can actually move this up and down the fret board if you want to play different kinds of nine chords like if you want to play a C9 you can slide it back two frets you’re going to play an E9 of course you can slide it up. anywhere up and down the neck that is a movable ninth shape it’s a good one to know.
One more cool thing i want to point out before i go, if we go back to the sus2 chord D, A and E , you notice on the circle those are all right next to each other three notes right in a row. That makes it easy to locate your sus2 which is also the nine, the two is the nine, they’re both E. use the circle of fist as a cheat sheet to find your sus 2 and your 9 chords to get the ball rolling to create some music.
Now what you can do for fun is grab your guitar write a little tune, something simple or complicated whatever you like record it and send me a link to it so i can listen to it i would love to hear how i would love to hear you play some music thanks for watching
